ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's cross country team won the 2018 American Southwest Conference Championship on Saturday morning at the ASC Championship at the Abilene Christian Cross Country course in Abilene.
It is the second ASC title for the Cowgirls in the 10 years of the program, joining the 2010 team.
"The ladies trained all year for this race," said HSU head coach Zack Leggett. "It's been a weird fall weather-wise and we haven't raced as much as we would like but maintained their focus and came out and really performed well today."
The Cowgirls finished with a score of 56, 24 points ahead of second place McMurry. UT-Dallas was third with an 84 and LeTourneau finished fourth with a 90. East Texas Baptist was fifth, followed by Mary Hardin-Baylor, Concordia, Ozarks, Sul Ross State and Belhaven.
Sydney Tencate ran a 24.38 to pace the Cowgirls with a fourth-place finish. Yadira Loera ran a 25:10 to place eighth. Veronica Ritz ran a 25:50 to place 13th, Brittany Acosta ran a 25.56 to place 16th and Leslie Gonzalez ran a 27:49 to place 30th and round out the scoring lineup.
The Cowgirls will now run in the South/Southeast Regional at Berry College in Rome, Ga. On November 10.
