ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' cross country program will send four runners to the NCAA Division III South/Southeast Region Cross Country Championship on Saturday in Newport News, Virginia.
The races will be run at the Christopher Newport University Lee Hall Mansion Course. The men's 8K race is scheduled to run at 10 a.m. CST and the women's race will go off at 11:15.
The Cowboys will send a pair of freshmen in A.J. Tillman and Ben Splain. Tillman finished ninth at the American Southwest Conference meet with a time of 27:17. Splain finished 11th with a time of 27:24.
"The guys have been training hard and it will be good for them to get the experience of running in big important races," said HSU head coach Zack Leggett.
On the women's side, Sydney Tencate and Lauren Robson will compete. It is the second straight NCAA regional for Tencate, who has had a record-setting season for the Cowgirls. Tencate has placed first or second in every race this year with four wins.
Tencate ran a 24:03 to place 46th at the regional last year. She ran a 22:54 to place second at the ASC meet.
Robson is a freshman and she finished seventh at the ASC meet with a time of 24:17.
"Sydney has had a great year and she is such a competitor it would not surprise me to see her advance on to nationals," said Leggett. "Lauren has continued to improve every race and this is an important race for her, I expect her to run well."
The top seven individuals in the race that are not on one of the top two teams will qualify for the NCAA meet.
