ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons junior Sydney Tencate won the Bill Libby Invitational with a school-record time of 18:40 on Friday evening at Nelson Park in Abilene.
The Cowgirls finished fifth as a team with a total of 92 points. Lubbock Christian easily outdistanced the field with 44 points. Then Ranger College (71), Midwestern State (80), McMurry (86) and HSU were mixed in a tight race. Odessa College (141) and Schreiner (210) rounded out the field.
Tencate opened up a big lead in the final 1,000 of the 5K race. She ran away from second-place Amira Cunningham, who was running unattached and ended up beating her by 14 seconds.
Lauren Robson finished 12th in her first race as a Cowgirl with a time of 20:28. Yadira Loera was 32nd in the race with a time of 21:52 for HSU. Kaitlyn Garza ran a 22:11. Emily Olguin a 22:37, Yulissa Rios a 22:47 and Ariel Thomas a 22:57 to round out the Cowgirl lineup.
HSU will host its own meet next Friday, again at Nelson Park.
