Cowgirls Defeat LeTourneau In ASC Crossover


ALPINE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' volleyball team beat LeTourneau 25-23, 23-25, 25-7, 25-15 in American Southwest Conference crossover action at the Gallego Center in Alpine.

The Cowgirls used a strong defensive effort that held the Yellow Jackets to a -.081 hitting percentage in the match.

HSU trailed 21-20 in the first game but scored five of the final seven points to take the game. In the second game, LeTourneau was able to pull away late for the win.

The Cowgirls then dominated the match the rest of the way. HSU had a 13-point run in the third game to open a 22-6 lead. In the final game, the Cowgirls used an 11-point run to go from up 13-12 to up 24-12.

Sarah Bennett led the way for the Cowgirls with 12 kills and a .381 hitting percentage. Morgan Prince hit .320 and had 10 kills.

Defensively, Leecia DePaula led the team with 15 digs and Allison Kuster added 13. Rebekah Hayes had 16 assists and Ashley Pierce added 15.

The Cowgirls will play a pair of matches on Saturday, starting with East Texas Baptist at 10 a.m. followed by a 4 p.m. match with UT Tyler.

HSU is now 9-4 on the year and 2-3 in conference play. LeTourneau fell to 5-7 overall and 2-2 in conference action.
