SHERMAN, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' volleyball team started its season off with a pair of wins on Friday afternoon at the Austin College Tournament in Sherman.
HSU opened the season with a 26-24, 25-18, 17-25, 25-12 win over Millsaps and followed that with a 25-14, 25-23, 25-12 win over the University of Dallas.
In the first game of the Millsaps match, neither team led by more than five points and the Cowgirls won the final two points to take the game on a Meagan Bauer kill.
Leading 16-15, the Cowgirls used a 6-0 run to take control of the second game and held on for a 25-18 win. Millsaps battled back for the third game. The fourth game was close with the Cowgirls trailing 10-9, but HSU used a 15-3 run to end the match.
Ashley Pierce had a double-double with 17 assists and 10 digs. Rebekah Hayes added 15 assists and eight digs. Both Pierce and Hayes had three service aces each to lead the Cowgirls' strong serving effort. HSU had 11 total aces in the match.
Prince led the Cowgirls against UD by hitting .800 with kills on eight of her 10 swings. HSU hit .243 as a team in the match.
DePaula led the Cowgirls with 11 digs and Pierce had 16 assists. Sarah Bennett led a strong match at the net with nine blocks. The Cowgirls had 10 blocks as a team.
HSU will play Schreiner at 9 a.m. on Saturday and will play Centenary at 3 p.m.
