Cowgirls Split At ASC Volleyball Championship


RICHARDSON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' volleyball team split a pair of matches on the opening day of the American Southwest Conference Championship on Thursday at the UTD Activity Center in Richardson.

Game 1

Hardin-Simmons 3, UT Tyler 1

In the opening game of the tournament, the Cowgirls defeated UT Tyler 25-15, 14-25, 25-16, 25-18 to advance to the second round.

None of the four games were close as the Cowgirls rolled through the first, third and fourth games.

Grace Schulz led the HSU offense with 14 kills and five blocks. Allison Kuster added 13 kills. Mary Johnson led five Cowgirls in double figures with 16 digs. Ashley Pierce had 41 assists and 10 digs for a double-double.

Brieanne Brown led the Patriots with 16 kills. UT Tyler fell to 22-7 with the loss. They had beat the Cowgirls in each of the two previous meetings this season. HSU has a win over the Patriots in four of the last five ASC Tournaments.

Game 2

Mary Hardin-Baylor 3, Hardin-Simmons 0  

The Cowgirls dropped a tightly-contested match with Mary Hardin-Baylor 25-22, 25-22, 25-21.

HSU rallied from a 19-13 deficit to close the game to 23-22 in the first game but UMHB scored the final two points for the win. In the second game, HSU led 19-18 but the Cru went on a 5-0 run and eventually closed the game out 25-22.

In the final game, HSU trailed 22-13 but scored eight of the next 10 points to close it to 24-21 before the Cru pulled out the win.

Schulz led the Cowgirls with 11 kills and Leecia DePaula had 12 digs. 

UMHB is now 26-3 on the year. HSU is 15-16 and will play an elimination game against East Texas Baptist at noon on Friday.
