ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' volleyball team dropped an American Southwest Conference match to crosstown rival McMurry 25-16, 25-22, 18-25, 25-22 on senior night at the Mabee Complex on Thursday.
The Cowgirls honored its lone senior Grace Schulz before the game and she responded with a career-best 24 kills. Allison Kuster added 13 kills for the Cowgirls but the McMurry block was too strong all night. The Cowgirls had 33 attack errors in the match.
McMurry jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the first game and the Cowgirls could not overcome it. In the second game, the Cowgirls led 17-14 midway through the game but McMurry responded with an 8-1 run to take a 23-19 lead. HSU battled back to make it 23-22 but McMurry scored the final two points to win the game.
HSU jumped out to the early 8-1 lead in the fourth game and held the lead throughout the game. In the fourth game, the Cowgirls again started strong with a 4-1 lead but McMurry had a 5-0 run that eventually ballooned to an 8-2 rally and it gave McMurry control. HSU battled to the end and cut it to 24-22 before falling.
Mary Johnson led the Cowgirls with 21 digs and Leecia DePaula added 16. Odalis Rodriguez had 18 digs for McMurry and Christian Brown added 13. Jasmine Jones led a balanced McMurry attack with 14 kills and a .435 hitting percentage. Jordyn Burnell added 10 kills.
HSU is now 10-15 overall and 7-7 in ASC play. McMurry improved to 17-7 overall and 9-5 in league action. The Cowgirls will play at Sul Ross State tomorrow at 6 p.m. and close out conference play on Saturday at Howard Payne.
