ABILENE, Texas – Howard Payne rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Hardin-Simmons 8-25, 24-26, 25-21, 25-17, 15-11 in American Southwest Conference action at the Mabee Complex on Friday night.
The Cowgirls came out swinging in the first game and hit .440, while holding the Lady Jackets to a negative hitting percentage en route to the first game. HSU took a 2-0 lead when it held off a late Howard Payne charge.
Howard Payne used a 6-1 run when the third game was tied at 11 to take control of the third game. HPU again surged after an 11-11 tie in the fourth game and used a 7-1 run.
In the decisive fifth set, HPU led 10-7 before the Cowgirls scored three straight points to tie it at 10. The Lady Jackets then had the closing kick scoring five of the next six points to take the win.
Zhartezia Bradley had 16 kills for HPU and Jordan Livingston added 31 digs.
The Cowgirls are now 7-11 on the year and 4-3 in ASC action. HPU improved to 6-10 overall and is also 4-3 in league play. HSU will have a quick turnaround as it hosts Sul Ross State at noon on Saturday.
