Cowgirls Win HSU Invitational

ABILENE, Texas  — Hardin-Simmons' women's track and field team won the Hardin-Simmons Invitational on Saturday at the HSU Track and Field Complex.

The Cowgirls had three top five finishers in the 100 with Shanice Wright finishing second with a 12.49, Krysten Mellette a 12.54 for third and Martika Davis with a 13.78 for fifth.

Mellette and Wright ran 26.66 and 26.85 in the 200 to finish second and third.

Ashley Sutton place seventh in the 1500. Hailey Whiteside and Paige Goen finished first and third in the 100 hurdles and third and fourth in the 400 hurdles.

The HSU 4x100 team won the event with a 50.71.

Paige Goen and Danielle Keiner finished second and third in the high jump and Mellete and Davis finished fourth and fifth respectively in the long jump and Davis was third in the triple jump.

In the shot put, Meredith Akers was second and Rachel Davis fifth. Evlyn Collins and Rachel Davis placed second and third in the discus and Shannon Shipp placed fifth.

Evlyn Collins destroyed her career record in the hammer throw with a toss of 165-03. It is the seventh-best throw in the nation this year. She won the event. Meredith Akers finished fifth, Shipp sixth and Elissa Paniagua eighth.   

Shelby McIntyre won the javelin with a 115-9. It is her second straight win.

The Cowgirls won the event with a team total of 171 points. The University of Dallas was second with 143 and McMurry, who split its team between the ACU and HSU meet on Saturday was third with 89.5. There were 14 schools that sent entrants into the meet.
