Cowgirls Close Season Finishing 3rd in the ASC

May 4, 2019

MARSHALL, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' softball team finished third in the ASC Softball Championship Tournament to close their season after falling to UMHB by a final of 11-2 on Saturday morning.

The Cowgirls matched up with the UMHB Crusaders in the semi-final round of the ASC Tournament on Saturday after winning games against Sul Ross State and LeTourneau on Thursday and Friday.

The Cowgirls got out to a quick start with two doubles in the first to score a pair of runs, but the Crusader offense combined for 11 runs in the following innings to make it an 11-2 UMHB victory in five innings.

Taylor Hinojos started for the Cowgirls and Camille Scott and Gabby Ortega also threw in the game. Kathryn Reed started for the Crusaders and Bayleigh Grogan finished the game and got the win.

The Cowgirls had two players named to the ASC Softball Championship All-Tournament Team, freshman right fielder Sidney Cox and freshman third-baseman Kate Tovar.

Cox hit .363 (4 for 11) with three RBIs and two runs scored during the tournament. Tovar hit .400 (4 for 10) with two runs scored and an RBI on the weekend for the Cowgirls.

The Cowgirls finish the year with a record of 21-23 and 15-13 in the ASC. That is a 20-win improvement from the team a year ago for second-year head coach Chanin Naudin.

We want to send a big thank you out to our two seniors, Kaycee Koiner and Katlyn McCoy, for their incredible leadership throughout this season. On a team that had 15 freshmen, these two seniors were the perfect teammates and mentors and will be missed.
