ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' softball dropped both games of a doubleheader against East Texas Baptist University on Friday afternoon in American Southwest Conference play.
Game one was close until a rough fifth inning for the Cowgirls defensively that saw five runs plated for the Tigers. The Tigers went on to win 8-0 in five innings.
Gabby Ortega had five strikeouts and only allowed four earned runs in the game, taking the loss. Beatriz Lara pitched for ETBU and had seven strikeouts with only four hits allowed in the win.
Kenzee Hessert had a pair of hits including a triple to lead the Cowgirls. Dani Solis led the Tigers with two hits and two RBIs off a lined shot home run.
Game two was a pitchers' duel, and the two Tiger runs in the first inning ended up being the difference. Taylor Hinojos had a home run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Cowgirls could not tack on another and fell by a final of 2-1.
Hinojos pitched a great game allowing five hits in the full seven innings. Unfortunately for the Cowgirls, Presley Cox went six innings without allowing a hit, ending with two hits total against her and six strikeouts.
Hinojos had the home run and a Stephanie Pfeifer liner off the shortstop combined for the Cowgirl offense in game two. Mackenzie Anderson hit a two-run home run in the first to lead the Tigers.
The Cowgirls will continue this series with the final game scheduled for tomorrow but stay tuned to hsuathletics.com and the HSU Athletics Twitter and Facebook pages for updates about impending weather for tomorrow.
