Cowgirls Drop Game One to Howard Payne

April 4, 2019

BROWNWOOD, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' softball fell 4-3 in the first game of a three game series against Howard Payne in American Southwest Conference play.

The Cowgirls were down 2-0 for the majority of the game until a Sidney Cox single was followed by a Taylor Hinojos home run to tie the game at 2-2 in the sixth.

Kate Tovar then led off the seventh with a solo home run to take the lead 3-2 Cowgirls in the final inning. The Lady Jackets would not stay down, however, and Kayla Hill hit a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to get the Howard Payne win 4-3.

Tovar, Cox, and Karis Hessert all had a pair of hits for the Cowgirls. Alexis Sullivan led the Lady Jackets with two hits as well.

The Cowgirls started Gabby Ortega in the circle and finished with Taylor Hinojos.

The Jackets started with Tia Campos for four innings, then threw Audrey Simpson for a couple innings and had Hannah Stuart finish the game.

The series continues tomorrow with a double-header starting at 1 P.M. in Brownwood.
