ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' softball team won both games of a doubleheader against Louisiana College on Saturday in American Southwest Conference play after trailing in both in the final innings.
Game one saw the Wildcats score four through the second inning before the Cowgirls answered with three of their own in the second thanks in large part to a Brookelyn Casper two-RBI single making it 4-3.
LC added three more in the fourth and the Cowgirls again answered with two runs after a Casper RBI-double and a Stephanie Pfeifer RBI, making it 7-5.
The Cowgirls tied the game at seven in the fifth inning only to have the Wildcats score two again in the sixth, making it 9-7. A Camille Scott RBI-single and a Kenzee Hessert RBI-double tied the game at 9-9 to close out the sixth inning.
Louisiana College scored two more in the top of the eighth inning to make it 11-9. The Cowgirls were down to their last chance in the bottom of the eighth, down two runs.
Sydney Cox started the inning with a single, and a few Wildcat errors eft the bases loaded for Ke. Hessert, who singled to score one, making it 11-10 LC. Kaitlin Ammermann was the hero for game one with a walk-off chopper up the middle that scored two runs, final score 12-11 Cowgirls.
Brookelyn Casper started the game at pitcher and settled in well. Five defensive errors did not help her, but she only allowed seven hits in five innings with three strikeouts. Camille Scott finished the game with three innings and three strikeouts.
LC had Madison Dykes start the game and she threw four innings but was also the recipient of many defensive errors. She was replaced by Cameron Crochet who had five strikeouts but did get tagged with the loss in the Cowgirls' rally.
Ke. Hessert led the Cowgirls with three hits and two RBIs. Shelby Bergeron had a pair of hits including a triple for the Wildcats with three RBIs.
If you thought game one was theatrical, just wait until I tell you about game two. LC again had a hot start and was up 6-1 in the third. What would end up as five total Cowgirl errors played a big role in the early deficit.
However, these Cowgirls don't quit, and headed to the bottom of the seventh they had clawed back into the game down 8-4. Ke. Hessert started with a cue-ball tip off the end of the bat that dropped in no-man's land in front of the diving catcher for a single.
The single syndrome caught fire, and Scott and Ammermann also reached after poking balls through the infield, leaving the bases loaded. Taylor Hinojos singled through the right side to score a couple, and a bad throw back in scored a third, making it 8-7 LC.
Pfeifer reached on an error, and a Cox walk left the sacks full again with one out, Cowgirls down one. Tovar steeped up to the plate and drove the ball hard to the third baseman, who tried to make a snap throw to the plate to save the Wildcat lead.
That throw was offline and skipped to the backstop, scoring Hinojos easily and the speedy Pfeifer didn't hesitate, rounding third and sliding in home to score the winning run. The Cowgirls rallied for the second time on the day, final score 9-8.
Taylor Hinojos pitched the whole game for the Cowgirls and had four strikeouts and only three earned runs out of the eleven total runs because of the errors. The Wildcats started Cameron Crochet and finished with Sarah Gartman who was stuck with the loss.
Hinojos had three hits in game two with three RBIs and two runs scored, a nice way of helping herself as the pitcher. Sami Walters had three hits in game two for LC.
The Cowgirls get the series win 2-1 and move to 15-13 on the year and 10-5 in the ASC. The Louisiana College Wildcats sit at 18-10 now and 9-8 in the conference. The Cowgirls return to action next week when they will travel to Howard Payne for a three game American Southwest Conference series.
