ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' softball won the final game against Sul Ross 5-4 to complete the sweep of the Lobos on Saturday at Ellis Field in American Southwest Conference play.
The Lobos took an early lead in the second after a Hailey Guillen SAC fly, scoring Gabriela Raimondi from third to make it 1-0. The Cowgirls answered in their half of the second with a Gabby Ortega two-RBI double making it 2-1 Cowgirls.
Camille Scott added to the lead in the third with a SAC fly to make it 3-1 HSU. The Lobos took the lead in the sixth after an Ashley Weatherford RBI, an Annika Canaba RBI single, and with a score off an error, making it 4-3 Sul Ross.
Kenzee Hessert hit a lead-off double to start the inning and Camille Scott drover her in with a single to tie the game at 4-4. Abby Pounds came in to pinch run and stole second and Sydney Cox hit a clutch double to score what would later be the game-winning run for the Cowgirls in their 5-4 victory.
Gabby Ortega got the start in the circle and only allowed one earned run in five and two-thirds innings. Brookelyn Casper came in with the bases loaded in the sixth and got the Cowgirls out of the jam and earned the win.
Annie Alvarado got the start for Sul Ross. Jodie Vaughn came in and had the loss for the Lobos.
Scott led the Cowgirls with two hits and two RBIs. Raimondi led the Lobos with a pair of hits and runs scored wit ha stolen base.
The Cowgirls finish the series at 11-10 and 8-4 in the ASC. Sul Ross moves to 7-9 and 5-9 in the conference. HSU softball will be on the road next week with a doubleheader at the University of Dallas on Wednesday starting at 5 p.m.
