ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' softball split a pair of games with McMurry on Friday afternoon in American Southwest Conference play, losing the first 9-1 and winning the second 6-4.
In the first game, the Cowgirls were down early after a second-inning War Hawk homerun by Rachel Ripley making it 5-0 McMurry. Ripley would hit another homerun in the game and led her team with five RBIs in the 9-1 win.
Camille Scott started and pitched three innings for the Cowgirls in the loss and Hinojos pitched two innings. Hope Schoenema got the start and the win for McMurry on the mound with five strikeouts and one run given up.
In game two, the Cowgirls got off to a hot start with a leadoff double by Sidney Cox followed by a Karis Hessert homerun. Gabby Ortega later singled home a run to make it 3-0 HSU at the end of the first.
The Cowgirls held off a late War Hawk comeback attempt and got the win 6-4 to split the day against McMurry. Kenzee Hessert and Cox led the Cowgirls with three hits each. Ripley had two hits to lead McMurry.
Ortega got the start for HSU and pitched all seven innings with seven strikeouts and four runs allowed in the win. Kamwren Jackson took the loss for McMurry and Madison Morgan also pitched for the War Hawks in relief.
The Cowgirls move to 4-7 (1-1 ASC) on the year and McMurry stands at 6-7 (1-4 ASC) with one game remaining in the series. The game has been moved to Sunday at 1 P.M. due to weather conditions.
