ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's soccer fell in the season opener 1-0 to William Smith at the HSU Soccer Complex on Friday night.
The Cowgirls began their season against the fifth ranked William Smith Herons. The game went down to the wire, ending in double overtime with a William Smith golden goal in the 102nd minute scored by Maialen Martinez, assisted by Emilie Sauvayre.
The Cowgirls had five shots and one on goal while the Herons had nine total shots with four on goal. The Herons led with four corners to the Cowgirls two.
Freshman Haley Foley started her first career game in goal for the Cowgirls and had three saves in the loss. William Smith keeper Amanda Kesler had one save in the win.
HSU moves to 0-1 and William Smith is now 1-0 on the season. The Cowgirls will be back in action tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. against Cal Lutheran at the HSU Soccer Complex in Abilene.
