Kessler Named Athlete of the Year; Meyer All-American

Kessler Named Athlete of the Year; Meyer All-American

December 4, 2018

AUSTIN, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's soccer players continue to collect awards for their outstanding season, this time for their efforts in the classroom.

Senior forward Kenne Kessler was named the 2018 Division III Google Cloud Academic All-America® Athlete of the Year and fellow senior Josey Meyer joined Kessler as a first-team Academic All-American as selected by the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA).

Kessler and Meyer have now been named CoSIDA first-team Academic All-Americans two years in a row, and Kessler repeats as the Academic Athlete of the Year, which, including Kami Jones from 2016, makes it three years in a row that Hardin-Simmons' women's soccer has received the top honor.

The CoSIDA Google Cloud Academic All-America® program is one of the flagship programs of the organization and the program is run by the sports communication professionals from around the nation. Each player is nominated by their local communications director and are split into districts around the nation. Those nominees are voted into all-district teams and the first-team selections go onto the ballot for All-American.

The ballot for All-American is then voted on by the SIDs around the country and it is based on both athletic and academic performance. It is a significant honor to be named to the Academic All-American team.

Kessler is a senior forward who led the Cowgirls with 14 goals and had seven assists as well. She was named the American Southwest Conference offensive player of the year and was named first-team All-American by the United Soccer Coaches. Kessler is a 4.00 student as a biology/pre-med major and has already been accepted into physical therapy school.

Meyer is a senior midfielder who led the team in assists with 13 and scored three goals. She was named an all-region player by the United Soccer Coaches and the ASC sportsmanship athlete of the year. Meyer is a 4.00 student as a biology/pre-physical therapy major.

Meyer and Kessler are both members of a memorable senior class for Cowgirl soccer, finishing with an overall record of 80-5-6, winning all four ASC Championships and making four straight appearances to the NCAA DIII Tournament Sweet Sixteen.
