ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's soccer team will host Puget Sound, Trinity and Occidental in the first and second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship this weekend at the HSU Soccer Complex.
The Cowgirls will face Puget Sound out of Washington in the first round at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Trinity will play Occidental at 3:30 p.m. The two winners will face off on Sunday at 3 p.m. for a spot in the Sweet 16.
HSU is 16-1-1 on the year. Puget Sound is 13-5-2 overall and won the Northwest Conference. Trinity is 16-1-1 as well and Occidental comes in with a record of 10-2-5 on the year. Occidental advanced to the NCAAs by winning 6-5 on PKs against Pomona-Pitzer in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship.
Hardin-Simmons and Puget Sound have played four times in the NCAA Tournament with each team advancing twice. The last time they played it was in the second round and UPS won, 1-0, on a late goal in the second overtime.
The Cowgirls are making their 18th career appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament and they are 23-13-7 all time and have advanced in five of the seven penalty kick opportunities. HSU has advanced to the round of 16 each of the last three years and last year went to the Final Four for the second time in its Division III history.
Kenne Kessler leads the team with 13 goals and seven assists and is the Cowgirls all-time scoring leader. Sarah Krisa has made the move from midfield to the back this season and has helped anchor a defensive back line that has allowed just six goals on the year.
Caitlin Christiansen is in her third season as a starter in goal and Josey Meyer leads the team with 10 assists and also had three goals. Freshman Randie Dennison has 11 goals and freshman Finda Kollie has eight goals and six assists.
