ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's soccer team tied UT Dallas 1-1 in Saturday night's American Southwest Conference game.
The Comets came out strong and had a succession of corners eventually leading to a goal by Ashyln Sims after a deflection off a corner in the 34th minute. The Cowgirls stormed back and led the game in possession and pressure from then on.
Finally, in the 83rd minute, Kendell Groom had a long shot after a Comet clear attempt which she scooped into the top corner of the net for the 1-1 equalizer. Groom also had an incredible night defensively.
The game pressed into double overtime, and the pressure was on until the final whistle, but neither team could put across a winning goal. Both teams now sit at the top of the conference with 7-0-1 ASC records.
The Cowgirls had 16 shots with nine on frame while the Comets totaled six shots and three on goal.
Both keepers were awarded a tie, but their individual efforts cannot be expressed enough. Caitlin Christiansen had an insane save on an upper-90 shot attempt, one of her two saves. Comet keeper Monica Dallacasa recorded eight saves while battling off a barrage of shots from Cowgirl corners.
HSU (10-1-1, 7-0-1 ASC) will travel to play UMHB next Thursday at 5 p.m. While Senior Day marks the last official home game for the Cowgirls, be sure to join us on Thursday, October 25th when HSU plays at the other Abilene school down south.
