BELTON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team saw its season most likely come to an end with a 75-64 loss to Texas-Dallas on Friday evening in Belton at the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament.
The Cowgirls are 19-8 on the year and would need an at-large bid from the NCAA Selection Committee to get into the NCAA tournament.
If it is the end, it was a massive turnaround for the program. The Cowgirls improved from 6-20 a year ago and the team is young with no seniors on the roster. They also won their first ASC Tournament game since 2011.
The Cowgirls got off to a strong start and Taylor Gaffney gave the Cowgirls a 14-7 lead midway through the first quarter. HSU led 19-16 after the first quarter. UTD led 26-25 midway through the second quarter, but UTD went on a 9-0 run to open a 35-25 lead.
HSU made a push toward the end of the third quarter and Maria Fernandez hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 45-43 with 3:42 to play. The difference in the game probably came in the next two minutes when the Comets went on an 8-0 run and led 53-47 heading into the final quarter.
UTD opened a 13-point lead late in the game and the Cowgirls cut it to 69-64 with :40 to play but could get no closer.
Victoria Pena led UTD with 22 points and Raenett Hughes added 21. The Comets improved to 23-4 on the year and will play for the ASC title on Saturday.
