BELTON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team beat the University of the Ozarks 67-49 to advance to the semifinals of the American Southwest Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon in Belton.
The win was the first in the ASC Tournament since the 2011 season for the Cowgirls.
HSU took control of the game in the first quarter and never let up. A 13-2 run midway through the first quarter gave the Cowgirls a 21-9 lead. HSU pushed the lead out to 28-16 after the first quarter.
"It feels amazing, we played really well defensively for most of the game," said Kaitlyn Ellis "It's always good to get out to a lead and just stay on them."
Taylor Gaffney's lay-up with 5:48 to play in the first half gave the Cowgirls a 39-19 lead, it's biggest of the first half and HSU led 39-23. The Cowgirls continued to build the lead in the third quarter and led by as many as 23 points.
Delanie Stephens had 12 points for Ozarks and Kerigan Bradshaw and Kamryn McKinney scored 10 points each.
HSU is now 19-7 on the year and Ozarks completed its season with a 13-13 record. HSU will play at 5 p.m. Saturday against the winner of the UTD-McMurry game.
