Cowgirls’ Winning Streak Snapped At Howard Payne


BROWNWOOD, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team saw its seven-game winning streak snapped with a 76-61 loss to Howard Payne in American Southwest Conference action at the Brownwood Coliseum on Saturday.

The Jackets came out strong and the Cowgirls trailed 21-7 after the first quarter. The Cowgirls never led in the game. HSU shot just 25 percent in the first half.

The Cowgirls cut the deficit to nine on a couple of occasions in the third quarter but Howard Payne pushed the lead back out each time.

Taylor Gaffney led the Cowgirls with 17 points and Maria Fernandez chipped in 14.

Chelsey Harris had 33 points for Howard Payne and Payge Grable and Caprica Brooks each had 13.  

HSU is now 16-7 overall and 10-5 in ASC play. Howard Payne improved to 10-13 overall and 7-7 in conference play. HSU will host Arlington Baptist at 5:30 on Monday at the Mabee Complex.
