ALPINE, Texas – Taylor Gaffney set the school record with 13 assists in a 92-63 win over Sul Ross State in American Southwest Conference women's basketball action at the Gallego Center in Alpine.
The Cowgirls pulled away in the second half and established a new season high in points scored as they won their seventh straight game. HSU also clinched second place in the ASC West Division.
HSU scored the final four points of the first quarter and led 20-13 after the first. In the second quarter, HSU pushed the lead out to 40-30 at halftime.
The Cowgirls had a strong start to the third quarter and quickly pushed the lead to 54-36. However, Sul Ross State came right back with a 14-3 run to cut the deficit to 57-50. HSU then busted the game open when Jesyka Lee hit three straight 3-pointers to end the third quarter.
HSU received big efforts from several players. Gaffney had 15 points to go with her 13 assists. She broke Diana Martinez's record of 12 assists in a game. Kaitlyn Ellis led the Cowgirls with 16 points. Kiana Reed had 14 points and eight rebounds Maria Fernandez added 13 points and Keilee Burke added 10 points.
The Cowgirl defense held the Lobos to 28.4 percent shooting on 21-of-74 shots.
Chandrea Nunez led Sul Ross State with 20 points on 6-of-21 shooting.
HSU is now 16-6 on the year and 10-4 in league play. Sul Ross State fell to 5-17 overall and 3-10 in conference action. HSU will play at Howard Payne at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
