ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team won an American Southwest Conference game against Sul Ross 87-56 on Saturday in the Mabee Complex.
The Lobos got off to a quick start, including a 9-0 run that put them up seven halfway through the first quarter. The Cowgirls stormed back with seven three-pointers, three by Karlea Ritchie, and ended the first quarter leading 25-20.
The second quarter was dominated by the Cowgirls, outscoring their opponent 25-6 and making the halftime score 50-26 in their favor. Hardin-Simmons' was on fire from three in the first, making 12-of-25 in the half.
The three-point shooting cooled off for the Cowgirls in the second half, but not the scoring, as Hardin-Simmons' would go on to win by a final score of 87-56.
The Cowgirls had four players in double-figures for points, Ritchie led the team with 17 points, Taylor Gaffney added 15, Maria Fernandez had 14 and Kiana Reed scored 11. Ritchie, Gaffney, and Fernandez each had four made three-pointers.
Chandre Nunez led the Lobos and the game in scoring with 18 points. Annie Lenoir had nine points for Sul Ross with a couple of very deep threes.
The Cowgirls move to 12-6 on the year and 6-4 in the ASC. Sul Ross moves to a 4-14 record, 2-7 in conference. Hardin-Simmons' continues its homestand next Saturday at 1 p.m. against crosstown rival McMurry.
