Cowgirls Late Rally Falls Short at No. 7 UMHB

 

BELTON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' upset bid at No. 7 Mary Hardin-Baylor came up just short as the Cru scored the final eight points of the game in a 66-58 win in American Southwest Conference women's basketball action at the Mayborn Campus Center on Thursday night. 

The Cowgirls trailed 14-10 after the first quarter and trailed 35-24 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Cowgirls cut the deficit to 35-28 before the Cru went on a 12-2 run to take a 47-30 lead with 3:53 to play in the quarter.

HSU responded as Maria Fernandez score eight points over the rest of the quarter and the Cowgirls cut the deficit to 51-42 heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Cowgirls started to chip away at the deficit and Samantha Newton hit a 3-pointer with 4:59 to play to cut the deficit to 55-51. Jesyka Lee hit a jumper and then Newton another jumper to tie the game at 55 with 3:13 to play.

Alicia Blackwell hit a 3-pointer for the Cru but Lee answered with a 3-pointer of her own with 1:58 to play to tie the game. UMHB scored the final eight points over the final 1:36, including 6-of-8 at the free throw line to seal it.  

Fernandez scored 14 points off the bench for the Cowgirls to lead the way. Kiana Reed had 10 points and Keilee Burke, playing in her hometown, had 14 rebounds for the Cowgirls.

Hannah Holt led a balanced attack for the Cru with 16 points and Rollins added 13.

The Cowgirls are now 9-6 overall and 3-4 in conference action. UMHB improved to 15-1 overall and 7-0 in ASC play. HSU will play at Concordia on Saturday at 1 p.m., before returning home for five straight games.
