MARSHALL, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team came up short at No. 15 East Texas Baptist, falling 62-47 on Saturday afternoon in American Southwest Conference action at Ornelas Gym.
Both teams came out cold and the Cowgirls trailed 13-6 after the first quarter. HSU made a run at the start of the second quarter and cut the deficit to 21-15, but ETBU pushed the advantage back to 33-17 at halftime.
ETBU pushed the lead out to 53-26 at the end of the third quarter. HSU had a strong surge in the fourth quarter cutting the deficit to 15 on a pair of occasions but could get no closer.
The Cowgirls were held to 31 percent shooting in the game, while ETBU shot 43.6 percent for the contest. HSU did force the Tigers into 22 turnovers in the game,
Freshmen Keilee Burke and Samantha Newtown had eight points each to lead the Cowgirls in the contest.
Amanda Wilson led a balanced Tiger attack with 13 points and added 13 rebounds. Kendrick Clark had 12 points and Valerie Matlock added 10 points.
The Cowgirls are now 9-5 overall and 3-3 in ASC play. ETBU improved to 12-1 on the year and 6-1 in league action. HSU will play at another nationally-ranked team when it plays at Mary Hardin-Baylor on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
