Cowgirls Fall To Hot-Shooting Eagles


CLARKSVILLE, Ark. – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team could not stop a hot-shooting University of the Ozarks team in the fourth quarter and UO rallied for an 80-72 win in American Southwest Conference action in Clarksville on Wednesday evening at Mabee Gym.

The Cowgirls started off with a cold-shooting first quarter and trailed heading into the second quarter 12-8. HSU exploded for 33 points in the second quarter and 28 of them came from their freshman. Samantha Newton had nine points in the quarter and Logan Haller added eight and the Cowgirls led 41-32 at halftime.

HSU pushed the lead out 55-40 with 3:18 to play in the third quarter on a Newton 3-pointer then the Eagles exploded the rest of the way. Ozarks scored the final 10 points of the quarter to cut it to 55-50 heading into the final period.

Ozarks took its first lead of the second half on a Savannah Kate Smith layup with 4:17 to play. HSU retook a lead on a Taylor Gaffney jumper in the corner with 3:28 to play making it 66-65.

The Cowgirls trailed 74-72 after a Conley Niblett layup with 1:18 to play but the Eagles scored the final six points of the game for the win.

Ozarks hit 9-of-14 shots in the fourth quarter and 5-of-7 3-pointers in the quarter. Both teams shot well at over 47 percent for the game.

Newton led the Cowgirls with 14, Haller added 13 and Niblett 10 – all of the bench. Hailey Ostrander led the Eagles with 25 points.

The Cowgirls are now 7-2 on the year and 1-2 in conference play. Ozarks is 4-5 on the season and 2-0 in conference action. HSU will travel to UT Tyler for a 5:30 game on Friday.
