ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team dropped its first game of the season falling 68-60 in overtime to Belhaven in American Southwest Conference action on Saturday at the Mabee Complex.
The Cowgirls could not overcome a cold shooting game as they shot just 25.9 percent from the field in the game and went 4-for-33 from 3-point range.
HSU jumped out to an early 10-3 lead in the first quarter and led 14-12 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, HSU scored the first six points to take its biggest lead of the game. Belhaven responded with a 12-2 run to take the lead and the Blazers held a 27-25 lead at halftime.
Belhaven opened its lead up to 40-30 with 2:48 to play in the third quarter, but the Cowgirls went on an 11-1 run to end the third and start the fourth quarter and took the lead with 8:03 to play.
Samantha Newton's 3-pointer with 2:11 to play gave HSU a 53-51 lead. Belhaven tied the game at 54-54 with a pair of free throws by Brittany Ford with 1:24 to play. Neither team scored the rest of the way as the Cowgirls had two chances for the win but Taylor Gaffney came up short both times.
In the overtime, HS led 58-56 with 2:10 to play but the Blazers outscored the Cowgirls 10-2 over the final 1:53 to take the win.
The Cowgirls are now 7-1 overall and 1-1 in ASC action. Belhaven improved to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in ASC play. HSU will travel to Clarksville, Ark., to take on Ozarks on Wednesday evening.
