SEGUIN, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team pulled off three rallies and Taylor Gaffney scored eight points in the final :28 seconds to give HSU an 87-86 win over Southwestern on Sunday afternoon in Seguin.
The Cowgirls trailed 84-79 with :28 to play when Gaffney hit a 3-pointer. Kelsey Faykus hit a pair of free throws for Southwestern then Gaffney hit a driving lay-up. Karlea Ritchie then came up with a steal and Gaffney got fouled and made the first free throw but missed the second. Ritchie then got an offensive rebound and Gaffney was fouled again with :04 to play and she hit both free throws to give the Cowgirls the win.
Gaffney had sent the game to a second overtime with a lay-up with eight seconds to play in the first overtime. Southwestern missed a lay-up that would have won the game.
HSU trailed 60-51 going into the fourth quarter but A'Breanna Harrison came alive in the post with six straight points and Keilee Burke added a lay-up to cut it to 60-59 with 4:24 to play. Southwestern scored four straight and then Harrison made a basket and Ritchie hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 64 with :35 to play.
Cecily Woolfolk gave the Pirates the lead with a shot in the paint with :21 to play. Harrison then hit a pair of free throws with :06 to play in regulation to send the game to overtime.
The Cowgirls are 6-0 under first-year head coach Kendra Hassell and the six wins are the most to start a season since the 2002-03 season. That was Hassell's senior season for the Cowgirls when they started the year 27-0. HSU has also matched the win total from a year ago.
HSU will be back in Abilene to host Louisiana College at 5:30 on Thursday at the Mabee Complex in the American Southwest Conference opener.
