Cowgirls Move To 5-0 With Win At Texas Lutheran


SEGUIN, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team moved to 5-0 on the year with a 63-57 win at Texas Lutheran on Saturday afternoon at Memorial gym in Seguin.

The Cowgirls are 5-0 for the first time since the 2005-06 season, and that team advanced to the NCAA Division III Final Four.  

HSU limited the Bulldogs to 3-of-19 shooting from 3-point range and hit 10 3-pointers of its own.

With the game tied at six, the Cowgirls used a 12-6 run to close out the first quarter to take an 18-12 lead. The Cowgirls pushed the lead out 34-23 with 3:21 to play in the first half and ended up leading 40-33 at intermission.

Texas Lutheran opened the second half on an 11-3 run to take a 44-43 lead, but the Cowgirls responded right back with an 8-0 run to close the quarter to push the lead to 51-44 at the end of three quarters.

Karlea Ritchie's 3-pointer with 5:57 gave HSU a 57-46 lead but the Bulldogs cut the Cowgirls' lead to 58-57 with 1:16 to play. Maria Fernandez then hit two free throws to make it 60-57 and the Cowgirls forced a miss for TLU. Ryan Bush then put the game away with a 3-pointer with :28 to play.

HSU is 5-0 and will play Southwestern on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Seguin. HSU beat the Pirates 62-40 in the first meeting between the two on Nov. 15.

Bush hit four 3-pointers and tied for the team lead with 12 points with Keilee Burke. Taylor Gaffney and Fernandez had 10 points each. Cami Davis led TLU with 14 points.
