ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team moved to 4-0 on the season with a 76-68 win over Trinity on Tuesday night at the Mabee Complex.
Both teams started off cold and it was 7-4 at the first media timeout. The Cowgirls took the lead at the end of the quarter when Jesyka Lee hit a 3-pointer as time expired to give HSU a 15-14 lead.
Ryan Bush's 3-pointer with 6:24 to play in the second quarter pushed the HSU lead out to 27-19. Keilee Burke's jumper gave the Cowgirls a 36-23 lead late in the second quarter and HSU had a 38-30 lead at halftime.
HSU led 59-51 going into the fourth quarter and Maria Fernandez scored five quick points to push the lead out to 66-51. The Cowgirls held the Tigers off the rest of the way.
The Cowgirls received a balanced attack. Taylor Gaffney led the Cowgirls with 19 points, Kaitlyn Ellis added 12 and Fernandez had 11. Freshman Keilee Burke grabbed 19 rebounds for the Cowboys and also added three blocks, three steals, two assists and five points.
Emily Daniel led the Tigers with 19 points and Abby Holland added 11.
Both teams came into the game 3-0 and Trinity went to the NCAA Tournament last year and beat the Cowgirls twice last season, including a 73-48 win.
HSU will travel to Seguin this weekend to play Texas Lutheran on Saturday and Southwestern on Sunday.
