ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team moved to 3-0 on the year with a 62-40 win over Southwestern on Thursday night at the Mabee Complex.
Both teams started off the game cold but a Ryan Bush 3-pointer late in the first quarter gave the Cowgirls a 7-6 lead. The Pirates led 11-8 after the first quarter.
The Cowgirls hit four 3-pointers in a 14-6 run to bust the game open at 43-29 with 3:16 to play in the third quarter. Taylor Gaffney and freshman Maria Fernandez each hit 3-pointers to start the run and Karlea Ritchie hit back-to-back 3-pointers to end the run. Southwestern made a late push to cut the deficit to 45-38 heading into the final quarter.
HSU dominated the fourth quarter outscoring the Pirates 17-2 in the final quarter to move to 3-0 for the first time since the 2010-11 season when the Cowgirls started 4-0.
Gaffney led a balanced attack for the Cowgirls with 14 points and Fernandez scored 11 points and handed out nine assists without a turnover.
HSU forced 25 turnovers in the game and held Southwestern to 30 percent shooting. HSU also had a 16-0 advantage in fast break points.
Cecily Woolfolk led the Pirates with 13 points.
The Cowgirls will return to action on Tuesday when it hosts Trinity. Southwestern fell to 0-1 on the year.
