ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team had to hold off two last-second shots at a win by McMurry and it did to beat crosstown rivals 51-50 on Saturday afternoon at the Mabee Complex.
The Cowgirls came into the game needing a win and a loss by Sul Ross State to claim a spot in next week's American Southwest Conference Tournament and that is exactly what happened. HSU will be the No. 4 seed out of the ASC West and will play UT Dallas on Thursday at 7:30 in Richardson.
Both teams came out playing at high level in front of the biggest crowd of the season for the Cowgirls. McMurry led 16-15 after the first quarter. The Cowgirls took a 25-20 lead with 2:53 to play in the first half and McMurry closed the quarter on a 7-2 run and Dominique MacHuca's 3-pointer right before halftime tied the game going to intermission.
McMurry took a 43-42 into the final period. Taylor Gaffney gave the Cowgirls a 51-48 lead with 1:29 to play on a pair of free throws and Sham Hunter scored for McMurry to make it 51-50.
Both teams missed on a pair of free throws on their next possession. McMurry had the ball with :32 to play. Isabel Carrion missed a layup with :03 to play but the ball was rebounded by McMurry. After a timeout, Hunter missed a shot under the basket and the Cowgirls celebrated a trip to the ASC tournament.
The Cowgirls are now 6-19 on the year and 4-13 in ASC play. McMurry closed its season with a record of 13-11 overall and 11-6 in league play.
