ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team lost its home opener to UT Tyler, 86-71, on Thursday night in American Southwest Conference action at the Mabee Complex.
The Cowgirls came out strong in the first quarter and took a 16-10 lead toward the end of the quarter. UT-Tyler responded with a strong second quarter and took a 38-32 lead into the halftime locker room.
The Patriots used a 15-3 run out of halftime to take control of the game and held off the Cowgirls the rest of the way.
The Cowgirls shot 48.9 percent in the game, which was the best shooting night of the year, but the Patriots used a 23-8 advantage in points off turnovers to offset the good shooting night.
Carissa Spiker and Demi Cumby had 19 points each to pace the Patriots.
The Cowgirls are now 3-4 on the year and 1-2 in ASC action. UTT improved to 4-2 on the year and 2-0 in league play.
HSU will take the week off for finals before playing Texas Lutheran next Saturday at the Mabee Complex at 5:30 p.m.
