Cowgirls Close Out Season With Overtime Loss
ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team went into the final game of the season with just pride on the line, but the Cowgirls fought to the end in an 87-85 overtime loss to Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday at the Mabee Complex.

Mary Hardin-Baylor made a late push at the end of the second quarter to take a 43-36 halftime lead.

The Cowgirls came out in the second half and scored the first 11 points to take a 47-43 lead. All 11 points were scored by the seniors. Kourtney Holyfield had the first eight and Kayla Brown finished the run with a 3-point play. HSU held the Cru without a point the first 5:28 of the half. The Cowgirls took a 56-51 lead into the fourth quarter.

HSU led 72-65 with 4:02 to play, then UMHB scored 11 straight points to take a 76-72 lead with 1:11 to play. The Cowgirls battled back and got the game to overtime when Deontae Ingram scored and the Cowgirls got a steal by Ja'Lee Carver and she was fouled and hit both two free throws to send it to overtime.

UMHB took an 86-84 lead with :55 to play, and Deontae ingram was fouled and split a pair of free throws. Carver came up with another steal but the Cowgirls could not score and had to foul Meghan Turner, who split a pair of free throws with :09 to play. Holyfield's game-winning attempt came up short and the Cru escaped with the win.

Holyfield led the Cowgirls with 21 points and Carver added 20 points, six steals and four rebounds. Kayla Brown had the 22nd double-double of her career with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

Jonelle Smith led four UMHB players in double figures with 16 points. Alicia Blackwell added 15, Kendra Wynn 14 and Jesslyn Poole had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Hardin-Simmons finished the season with a record of 8-16 overall and 4-12 in conference play. Mary Hardin-Baylor improved to 17-8 overall and 10-6 in ASC play.
