Cowgirls Rally For Season-Opening Win At Texas Lutheran
SEGUIN, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team opened its 2016-17 with a dramatic road victory at Texas Lutheran, 84-83, on Tuesday evening in Seguin.

The Cowgirls trailed most of the game and had been behind by as much as 13 points in the fourth quarter, but HSU started to chip away at the deficit. Danie Mabry made a layup and freshman Deontae Ingram followed with a 3-point play and Kayla Brown made another lay-up to cut the deficit to 68-62 with 6:37 to play.

The Bulldogs still had a 75-69 lead when Brown hit a 3-pointer with 2:53 and after Caitlin Rendon scored for TLU Brown came right back with a layup to make it 77-74. TLU led 81-76 with 1:49 to play.

Jasmine McClellan then hit a lay-up and Mabry stole the inbounds pass and made another layup and Heidi Schroeder came up with another steal and Mabrie hit a runner with :38 to play to give the Cowgirls their first lead since the first quarter at 82-81.

Rendon scored again for the Bulldogs to make it 83-82 and Mabry came down and hit another driving shot with 12.8 seconds to play. Schroeder blocked Kristen Lye's shot with :09 to play and the Bulldogs did not get off another shot.

TLU forced 10 Cowgirl turnovers in the first quarter to jump out to an 18-11 lead and TLU led 40-33 at halftime. TLU used a 10-1 run out of the halftime locker room to take its biggest lead of the game at 50-34 with 7:26 to play in the third quarter.

HSU shot 54 percent in the game from the field but the game remained close because of a 13-of-26 effort at the free throw line.

Mabry led four Cowgirls in double figures with 21 points. Schroeder added 14 points and McClellan and Brown had 12 each. Deontae Ingram had nine points and 10 rebounds in her Cowgirl debut.

Rendon led the Bulldogs with 17 points and Lye added 15.

The Cowgirls return to action on Saturday at Southwestern.
