Cowgirls Fall To Puget Sound, 70-54
TACOMA, Wash. – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team fell behind early and never recovered in a 70-54 loss at Puget Sound in the first game of the Doug McArthur Classic in Tacoma, Wash.

The Loggers jumped to an early 8-2 lead and lead 15-8 after the first quarter. In the middle two quarters the teams were pretty even with UPS winning the second 17-15 and both teams scored 18 points in the third quarter.

HSU cut the deficit to 47-41 with 1:27 to play in the third quarter on a 3-pointer by Kayla Brown. Addison Garcia's lay-up with 8:39 made it 53-48 but that is close as the Cowgirls would get the rest of the way.

Kourtney Holyfield led four Cowgirls in double figures with 15 points. Sara Vargas had 11 points, Brown had another double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds and Addison Garcia had 10 points.

The Cowgirls had 19 turnovers that turned into 24 Logger points. UPS had a 24-6 advantage in points off turnovers despite turning the ball over 16 times themselves.

Emily Sheldon led UPS with 22 points and Claire Fitzgerald added 17.

HSU is now 1-2 on the year and UPS improved to 2-0. The Cowgirls play Pacific Lutheran at 4 p.m. CST on Saturday.
