ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's cross country team finished second at the American Southwest Conference Championship on Saturday morning at the Abilene Christian Cross Country Course in Abilene.
The Cowboys came up four points short of UT-Dallas for the title. The Comets finished with a score of 50 and the Cowboys had a 54. East Texas Baptist was third with a 99, followed by Ozarks, LeTourneau, McMurry, Concordia, Belhaven, Mary Hardin-Baylor, Sul Ross State and Louisiana College.
Tyler Rohrman led the Cowboys with seventh-place finish and a time of 27:57. The Cowboys top-end depth kept them in contention for the title. Ben Splain was 11th with a time of 28:37, River Smith 13th was just behind at 28:40 and Sammy Magallen was 14th overall at 28:42. Nathan McKendree finished 28th overall with a time of 29:52 to round out the Cowboys' scorers.
Aaron Martinez and Tyler Stout finished No. 32 and 33 overall. Outside of the top seven Marcu Arroyo, Richard Denton and Michael Clark all finished in the top 50 of the meet and Steven Hicks was No. 64.
"We ran a good race, we came up just a few seconds short," said head coach Zack Leggett. "We have a lot to look forward to in the future of this program. I am proud of their effort."
Mack Broussard of East Texas Baptist won the individual title with a time of 26:56 and he was two seconds ahead of Nathaneal Rankin of Ozarks.
The South/Southeast Regional will be on Nov. 10 in Rome, Ga.
