ROUND ROCK, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' cross country teams will battle for the American Southwest Conference Championship on Saturday morning at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
The men's race will begin at 8:15 and be an 8K race. The women will run a 6K race, beginning at 9 a.m.
Sydney Tencate will be one of the favorites in the women's race along with Rayborn. Tencate has won four of her five meets this season and her best 6K time is 22:51. Rayborn has the top 6K time in the league this season at 22:47. Tencate placed fourth a year ago.
The Cowgirls finished seventh as a team last year with a score of 184. Yulissa Rios finished 37th with a time of 27:43 last year she is the only other Cowgirl to run last year. Emily Olguin placed 20th as a freshman.
This will be the first ASC meet for Kaitlyn Garza, Yadira Loera, Katlynn Nichols and Lauren Robson.
On the men's side, Nathan McKendree is the only Cowboy runner to compete in a previous ASC Championship race. He placed 12th a year ago with a time of 28:37.
Santos Alaniz, Richard Denton, Stewart Finn, Sammy Magallen, Dakota Patridge, River Smith, Ben Splain, Jordan Starr-Lopez and A.J. Tillman will be running in their first ASC Championship. All but Fenn, who is a transfer, are freshmen.
Splain has the best 8K time for the Cowboys this season at 27:55.
UT Tyler is the seven-time defending men's champion. UT Dallas won the women's race a year ago and senior Lindsey Rayborn is the defending champion.
