SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's cross country team won the first team title in a cross country meet since starting the program in 2008 with a win at the Saints Invitational at Windcrest Golf Club in San Antonio.
The Cowboys had a score of 69 to edge host Our Lady of the Lake by two points. Jacksonville College was third with 84, Texas Lutheran was fourth with 86, followed by McMurry, Southwestern, University of Dallas and Sul Ross State.
"I am proud of the effort the team is putting in their training and it paid off today," said second-year head coach Zack Leggett. "We ran a smart race and they just keep improving. We are headed in the right direction as a program."
Ben Splain led the Cowboys with a 10th place overall finish and he ran a 27:55 over the 8K race. It was the first 8K meet of the season. A.J. Tillman ran a 28:08 and placed 13th overall. Sammy Magallen ran a 28:15, to place 16th and Nathan McKendree ran a 28:55 for 23th and River Smith was right behind him with a 28:56 for 24th. When the unattached runners were taken out the scores were 7-10-13-19-20 for the top five counting HSU scores.
The Cowboys will run in the Oklahoma Baptist Invitational on Oct. 7 in their next event.
