ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's cross country team placed third at the HSU Invitational on Friday night at Nelson Park in Abilene.
Ranger College won the event with 27 points, Angelo State was second with 68 and the Cowboys were just three points back with a score of 71 to place third. Texas Lutheran was fourth with 99, Odessa College was a distant fifth with a 139, the University of Dallas had a 144 for sixth and Sul Ross State finished with 185.
Michael Campbell of Odessa College won the individual race with a time of 14:43 in the 5K race. Laban Kandie of Angelo State was second with a 15:33.
Ben Splain led the Cowboys with a time of 16:13 for a sixth-place finish. A.J. Tillman also had a top 10 finish as he ran a 16:33 for ninth. Sammy Magallen was 13th with a time of 16:46, and Jordan Starr-Lopez ran a 17:02 to place 19th.
Seven of the 10 Cowboy runners improved their time over last week's season opener.
The Cowboys will run in ACU's Naimadu Classic next Saturday in their next event.
