Former NCAA qualifier Derek Footer is in his third season as the assistant coach for the track & field program.
He assisted with the women's teams that won the ASC cross country and track and field championships in 2018-19. It was the second-ever titles in the history of the program for each sport. On the men's side, the Cowboys finished a close second in both the cross country and track and field championships.
The men and women combined for 20 new school records and Hasanai Chanriang qualified for the NCAA Championship for the third straight year. The women’s 4x100 and the men’s 4x400 also made the trip to nationals.
HSU had nine event champions at the ASC Track and Field Championships as well. With Footer's arrival, the teams have exploded in the number of participants with over 60 student-athletes in the 2018-19 season.
Both cross country teams qualified for the NCAA regionals a year ago for the first time in school history.
Footer is the first full-time assistant for the program that began competing in the 2008-09 season. Footer was a two-time national qualifier to the NCAA meet in the 110m hurdles. He placed ninth in the nation during his freshman season and 18th his sophomore season.
He also was a three-time American Southwest Conference champion in both the 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles. Footer was also a member of the HSU football team during his career at HSU.
His coaching background includes one year as a volunteer track & field coach at Texas Christian University. He was also a performance coach at Michael Johnson Performance. He spent a year as a graduate assistant track & field coach at Hardin-Simmons and worked in the HSU human performance lab.
He is a certified level 1 track & field coach through USA Track & Field and is a certified strength and conditioning specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
Footer has a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and a master’s degree in kinesiology both from Hardin-Simmons.
He is married to Sadie Drew Footer and they have a daughter.
