Tencate, Carrion Break School Records at Opening Meet
JOPLIN, Mo. -- Hardin-Simmons' track and field team opened up the indoor track season at the Missouri Southern Invitational and came away with three new school records.

Syndey Tencate broke the school record running the mile run in 5:40; the previous indoor record was 6:01. Tencate also ran in the 3000-meter run where she broke the previous record of 12:32.8 with a time of 11:28.09.

Sophomore Myra Carrion set a new Hardin-Simmons indoor record for the pole vault with a jump of 10-4 (3.15m) she would place eighth overall in the event.

This was the first track meet of the 2017 season and the first meet in the Zack Leggett era.

Also running the 3000 meters, Katlynn Nichols ran the run in 14.05.33, and on the Cowboys side, Nate McEndree finished in 10:04.09.

Carrion, also competed in the women's 200 meter dash where she ran it in 28.61 seconds. She was joined by Cowgirls, Jessica Eastham (28.62), Kalimah Muhammad (29.62), Kennedy Connor (30.46) and Paige Lindstrom (30.59).

Also running the mile was freshmen Madison Wooten who ran it in 6:46 and freshman Katlynn Nichols who ran the mile in 6:55. On the men's side Nathan McEndree finished the mile in 4:55.94.

Senior Warren Graham competed in the men's 60-meter dash and ran it in 7.35 seconds. On the women's side, freshman Kalimah Muhammad ran the 60-meter dash in 8.57 seconds, Samantha Pennese ran it in 8.58 and sophomore Kennedy Connor ran it in a 9.01.

In the hurdles, the men's 60 meter hurdles, Jerod Velasquez finished with a time of 9.46. On the women's side Molli Howard finished in 10.85 and junior Paige Lindstrom ran it in 11.06.

In the men's 200, Brandon Sparks-Moffett lead the men with a finish in 23.23, Hasanai Chanriang ran it in 24.11, Kevin Lavalais finished in a 24.40, Warren Graham ran the race in 24.59, Connor Sutton ran it in 25.61, Jerod Velasquez ran it in 26.02, Klayton O'Neal ran it in 26.19 and Andrew Fischer finished the race in 26.37.

In the 400 meter dash, Jessica Eastham posted a time of 1:07.87. on the men's side, Brandon Sparks-Moffett finished in 52.98, Hasanai Chanriang ran it in 54.19, and Connor Sutton finished in 58.45.In the men's 600 meter run, sophomore, Cesar Ramirez broke the previous HSU indoor record of 1:28.75  with a time of 1:19.78. Close behind him was sophomore Jylan Burris who finished in 1:20.76. Continuing with the middle distance, in the 800 meters, Madison Nichols ran the half mile in 3:01.08.

In the field events, freshman Connor Iacomini jumped an 11-5 3/4 (33.5m) in the pole vault. In the sand pit, Samantha Pennesse jumped a 14-7 (4.44m) in the long jump. Junior thrower Kaelon McLemore threw 36-2 1/4  (11.03 meters) in the weight throw. He also competed in the shot put where he threw 38-2 (11.63m).

Finishing up the meet with the relays, in the 4,000 distance medley relay, the Cowboys posted a time of 11:48.09 and the women finished with a time of 14:54.42. Finally in the 4x400 relay, the Cowboys posted a time of 3:50.62 and the Cowgirls posted a time of 4:33.04
