Hardin-Simmons Hosts Special Olympics Field Day
ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' athletic department held its fourth annual Special Olympics Track and Field Day on Thursday at the HSU Track Complex as part of national Division III Week.

Over 100 Hardin-Simmons student-athletes put together the track meet that including running events, modified javelin, shot put, softball/tennis throw and the running and standing long jumps.

The event helps the Big Country Special Olympians prepare for their upcoming district and regional competitions and also give Hardin-Simmons student-athletes a chance to interact with the special Olympians.

"To see what these kids do and how much joy they have in just competing puts things in perspective for us," said HSU softball student-athlete Kara LeLeux. "We have a blast interacting with them and we may get more out of it than they do."

This is the fourth annual event as part of Division III Week, which is a national celebration of the student-athletes in Division III.

There were 101 Special Olympians and many coaches and other volunteers who participated in the event.

"This is such a big event for us and our kids," said Luann Chastain the Big Country Special Olympics Director. "They enjoy coming out and getting to interact with the college kids and also compete in their events. It is a win-win situation for all of us."
