ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' tennis teams opened the season with the American Southwest Conference Individual Tournament on Friday and Saturday in Abilene.
On the women's side, Caanon Gibbons won the H draw singles with a 4-6, 6-1, 10-5 win in the finals over Alejandra Rueda of Concordia.
Lucila Decia won the flight I singles draw with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Kate Duke of McMurry.
Emily Shaffer went 1-2 in flight A; Sabra Zullo went 1-2 in flight B, Maddie Hammond went 1-2 in flight C; Kyra Mobley went 1-2 in flight D; Abigail Kendall went 2-1 in flight E; Jordan Shepley went 2-1 in flight F and Kelsey Doege also went 2-1 and advanced to the final of flight F before falling; Grace Masonheimer fell in the flight G finals and went 2-1; and Liz Lopez won the consolation bracket of the H draw.
Mobley and Kendall went 2-1 in A draw doubles. Shaffer and Shepley went 1-2 in B draw doubles. Doege and Lopez went 1-2 in C draw and Gibbons and Hammond won D draw doubles over teammates Masonheimer and Zullo.
On the men's side, Nathaniel Shoendorf won the C draw with a 7-6, 6-1 win in the final. Kwade Boyd won the E draw singles title, with a 6-3, 6-2 win in the final over Ty Tarver of East Texas Baptist. Keenan Nash won the G draw with a 6-2, 6-1 win over James Estrada of LeTourneau.
Holt Fields went 1-2 in the A draw. Griffin Weinkam lost in the B draw final, 6-3, 1-6, 10-5. Marcus Kleckner went 1-2 in D draw. Josh Lopez won the F draw consolations. Chris Beavers lost in the H draw final. Hayden Keller lost in the J draw final.
Weinkam and Fields won the A draw doubles with an 8-4 win over Martinez and Daniel of McMurry. Shoendorf and Lopez went 2-1 in B draw doubles. Beavers and Nash lost 9-8 in the C draw doubles final. Kleckner and Keller lost in the D draw finals.
