ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's soccer team tied UT Dallas 1-1 in an absolute brawl of a game on Saturday night in American Southwest Conference play.
This game featured a rematch of a neutral site game held in the second week of the season, which coincidentally also ended in a tie. As a witness of both games, I can tell you both teams left everything out on the field in both matchups, seeing a combined 220 minutes of each other.
The pressure was on and the Comets fired back with a goal just a minute later, in the 30th, after a shot went off the post and Jordan Henderson caught it off the rebound for UT Dallas to make the score 1-1.
Chippy is an understatement when describing this game, and both teams' all-out efforts were on display for the remainder of the game, which saw 25 total fouls and three yellow cards.
The game ended after double overtime and a surplus of runs, counter-runs, and many momentum swings, yielding a tie to both teams with the final score 1-1.
The Cowboys had 13 shots and six on goal, while the Comets shot 20 times and had five on frame.
Much like the women's game prior, the keepers were the real heroes for both teams. UT Dallas's Chase Therrien laid out for multiple saves, totaling nine. Trent Ivy had an outstanding night, with four saves. One of those was a headed attempt off a Comet corner from inside the six-yard box, and I still don't know how Ivy reacted to that ball, an amazing play to say the least.
HSU (3-8-2, 3-4-1 ASC) looks forward to playing at UMHB on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. and although the team won't be playing at the HSU Soccer Complex again, make sure you come out to show your support when the Cowboys take a visit to the other Abilene school down south on October 25th.
