ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's soccer team won 1-0 after scoring with two seconds left to get the win over Howard Payne in Thursday night's American Southwest Conference game.
Both the Cowboys and the Yellow jackets came in to the game with 2-4 ASC records and the intensity of the match was obvious. It was a war for 89 minutes and 58 seconds.
There's less than a minute to play and it's still a scoreless tie. Frane Vidosevic, who had been sidelined by injury for the weeks, gets control of the ball with under 30 seconds left.
Vidosevic gave the Cowboys a chance at goal with a looping skyrocket, landing right outside the box, while the PA announcer began the 10 second countdown.
Blaine Phariss was in hot pursuit, and only had one touch to get control, then ripped it over the keeper into the back corner of the net with 2 seconds on the clock. Chaos ensued, and the Cowboys finished it with a 1-0 victory over the Yellow Jackets.
The Cowboys had 15 shots in the contest with nine on frame. The Yellow Jackets had 10 shots and two on goal.
Trent Ivy got his third straight win with two saves, and Howard Payne keeper Andrew Hackney had a nice performance in the loss with eight saves.
HSU (3-8-1) returns this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. for Senior Day against UT Dallas.
