Cowboys Strike Late, Advance on PKs
RICHARDSON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's soccer team scored a dramatic goal with :22 to play to force overtime against UT Tyler and then advanced on penalty kicks to the American Southwest Conference Championship game on Saturday afternoon at the UTD Soccer Complex.

Brandon Wright scored for UT Tyler in the 77th minute to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead and the Cowboys rallied back behind a pair of seniors that didn't want their careers to end.

Colyn Moore served a corner kick to Tanner Coffin and he headed it home to tie the match with :22 to play. Both are fifth-year seniors that missed last season with knee injuries and both have had to overcome setbacks late in this season.

In the first overtime, neither team had a shot. In the second overtime, the Cowboys had a couple of shots and the Patriots put a shot on target but Michael Vargas saved it late and the match was decided on penalty kicks.

Both teams made their first four shots to set up some high drama. After Moore missed high for the Cowboys on the fifth shot Brandon Wright had a chance to win it for the Patriots, but Vargas, a four-year starter, made the biggest save of his career to punch the shot away.

Another senior Laurent Maksoud then buried his penalty kick and Jordan Welch missed over the bar to send the Cowboys to the Championship.

Vargas had three saves in regulation and overtime and John McGuffin had seven saves for the Patriots. HSU had an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal and UTT had a 15-13 lead in total shots.

The game officially goes into the record books as a 1-1 tie. HSU is 9-3-3 on the year and will face top-seed UT Dallas on Sunday for the Championship. UT Tyler finished the season with a 10-6-2 record.

HSU and UTD tied during the regular season and the two teams played for the ASC title two years ago in Richardson when the Cowboys won 2-0. HSU has won nine ASC titles.
