NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. – Hardin-Simmons senior men's golfer Luke Smith shot a 76 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship at Keene Trace Golf Club on the par-72, 7,190-yard Champion Trace Course in Nicholasville, Ky.
Smith started the round with three straight pars before back-to-back bogeys on No. 4 and 5. He added a bogey on eight, before rolling off nine straight pars. He bogeyed the 18th to finish at four-over par.
He is tied for 60th in the 216-player field. Smith will tee off at 12:40 CST on Wednesday. After the first 36 holes, the field will be cut down to the top 18 teams and the top six individuals not on those teams.
Sam Goldenring of Williams College leads the individual race. He shot a 3-under-par 69.
Illinois Wesleyan shot a 287 to lead the team race by one stroke over American Southwest Conference champion Concordia.
