Cowboys Shoot 293 In Season Opening Round

 

HOBBS, N.M. – Hardin-Simmons' men's golf team is in sixth place after the first day of the season-opening McMurry Invitational that is being played at the par-72, 6,615-yard Riverwind Links in Hobbs, New Mexico.

The Cowboys shot a solid round with a 293 total and sit in sixth place, just three strokes out of third. Texas Lutheran fired an 8-under par 280 to take a four-stroke lead over New Mexico Military Institute. McMurry, UT-Dallas and the University of the Southwest are all tied with a 290. HSU is sixth at 293, Schreiner is seventh, followed by East Texas Baptist, Mary Hardin-Baylor University of the Southwest B and Howard Payne.

Bobby Johnson shot a 1-under par 71 to lead the Cowboys in his first round as a Cowboy. Luke Smith and Matt Jouett each shot 73. Nick Vella had a 76, Greg Garrison shot 78 and Weston Vickers had an 85 in his first collegiate round.

Graem Burnet of the University of the Southwest leads the medalist race after shooting a 5-under par 67.

The tournament will conclude with 18 holes on Monday.
